FOLLOWING THE PERIOD UNDER discussion, the patient was in treatment for another eight months. She reluctantly terminated to live with Bob who had settled in another state. We were both
aware that she had more analytic work to do, but the healthy pull to life became strong enough for her to leave.
She married Bob one year later, writing to me the day before the wedding and expressing much gratitude for the change in her life. A year later, she became pregnant, and with that, she was also able to finally change her career. This is as profound a change as her being able to marry and establish what sounds like a healthy relationship.
She had chosen the same career as her father, and finally being able to give that up meant that she was at long last able to sever the complicated, destructive relationship with him. That she could now reclaim her own interests and pursue her special talents represent a reclaiming of a self that she can accept and love. She can now entertain the idea that what she does will not damage the world around her though this struggle is by no means fully resolved.
