The editors of The Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association and The International Journal of Psycho-Analysis have invited the editors of the other psychoanalytic journals to print the following editorial in their respective journals. Contemporary Psychoanalysis is pleased to honor this request. The action that provoked the editorial is a frightening and reprehensible infringement of academic freedom, and I join the editors of other journals in condemning it.
It should go without saying, but in the currently charged atmosphere it is probably worth saying explicitly, that the injury would be no less egregious, nor the condemnation less severe, if the victims in these incidents had been citizens belonging to nations or ethnicities on the other side of the contemporary conflict in the Middle East.
Those who wish to learn more about these events can consult “Mideast strife loudly echoed in academia” by in The New York Times of July 11, 2002.
