I am deeply appreciative of Hazel Ipp's beautiful discussion, which not only shows an exquisite grasp of the ideas in my article, but creatively and movingly expands on them as well. I have one quibble. I do not see myself as privileging language, although I do think language is extremely important in emotional life. Rather, I view linguisticality, relationality, and somatic affectivity as constitutive elements of a potential contextual whole, within which the sense of being can take form and flourish. If I privilege anything, it is contextuality—the contextuality of emotional experience, of unconsciousness, and of the sense of being.
