Recent trends in psychoanalytic theory and practice have opened up new and complex territory. In particular, intersubjective approaches have led us to examine how the field generated between the subjectivities of patient and analyst often provides access to crucial and otherwise unrecognized aspects of the patient's unconscious life. Yet the more radical implications of these ideas remain relatively unexplored. This paper suggests that a transpersonal context—a context that extends beyond the subjectivity of the individual and separate self—offers a framework with which to describe and address the profound and often mysterious dimensions of the psychoanalytic encounter.
