It happened that three interesting and closely related papers on shame were submitted to Contemporary Psychoanalysis at roughly the same time. Two of them, those by Andrew Morrison and Donna Orange, concern the analyst's shame, and the third, by Sandra Buechler, addresses the shaming of psychoanalytic candidates that is a ubiquitous, though unwelcome, part of training. Given that the three papers were so closely related, we decided to ask the writers to participate in a published symposium in which the three papers would be accompanied by discussions in which each writer would address the thinking of the other two. All three were enthusiastic about the project. The result, which we think is illuminating, lies before you.
