The contributions of neurobiology and infant research have greatly extended our understanding of unconscious processes. We are still driven by unconscious forces that we cannot control, but those forces represent unconscious perceptual and interpretive processes and cannot be viewed simply as instincts under repression as Freud believed. This paper reexamines the Freudian dynamic unconscious and the problem of agency in the light of these newer findings of neuroscience.
