The history of psychoanalytic institutes is checkered with pain and discord, triumph and exploration. How appealing it is now for me to have the opportunity to render, if only in words, as close to an Ideal Analytic Institute as the heart may dare to envision. This essay is an effort to cover all the bases in imagining a flexible and adaptive institute, based on collaboration and mutual respect, yet one that, paradoxically will always be a moving target, and therefore never Ideal—but perhaps ideal enough.
