My purpose in this paper is to present the ways in which contemporary films portray and are infused with the deepening awareness in which we live our lives. That the media have depicted our profession in bizarre and absurd ways is at least in part a function of the ways in which psychoanalysts actually behave. Taken to a point of caricature, especially in the past, portrayals of analysts still contain a grain of truth—the silent analyst, the authoritarian know-it-all, the perverted exploiter (unfortunately, he has existed throughout time—sex always sells). But these depictions are changing and some contemporary films have captured more faithfully what we, as contemporary psychoanalysts, currently do.
