In this essay I explore the function of sports in general and baseball in particular as a powerful element in the social construction and maintenance of masculinity within American culture. Sport's function as an element in ideology is explored. I suggest that some of the key elements in baseball as a mass-audience sport make masculinity a complex and ultimately unstable construction through the medium and media production of baseball. I explore baseball's relation to time and to language as aspects of complex gender assembly.
