Like other sports, baseball seems to have an almost inexplicable appeal. On reflection, it has something in common with analysis: a paradoxical and creative integration of structure and spontaneity, of detachment and identification, of timelessness and linear time. The rules, fields and situations of baseball are described and interpreted as a nonlinear field, which establishes special qualities of time and space. In this imaginative arena, sublime emotions like awe, nostalgia, elegance, beauty, triumph, and tragedy can come to life as the players perform their movements and skills.
