Damn the Torpedos! A Treatment Memoir*†

Carol Pepper, Ph.D., earned a B.A. in philosophy from Ursinus College, an M.A. in philosophy from Notre Dame University, a second M.A. in divinity from Yale University Divinity School; and a nursing degree from Berkshire Community College. She served as the pastor of Pilgrim Memorial Church, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and was the chaplain of Williams College, in Williamstown, Massachusetts, the first woman ever to hold this appointment. During her period of chaplaincy at Williams, she entered her first analysis with Martin Cooperman, M.D., traveling several days per week from Williamstown to Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where Cooperman was associate medical director of the Austen Riggs Center. She became interested in clinical psychology and was admitted to the Ph.D. program in clinical psychology of the City University of New York. Soon after receiving her Ph.D. in clinical psychology, she applied to the William Alanson White Institute and began her training as a candidate in psychoanalysis in 1997, graduating from the White Institute in 2002. Carol died in 2011, at age 59, following a 10-year battle with metastatic breast cancer. This paper is being published posthumously, as she wished. Her intent was to honor her work with Dr. Cooperman and to help ensure that his approach to psychoanalytic work would live on.
