When a patient is dying, both analyst and analysand are thrust into a space which is unique in its neither here- nor there-ness. In this essay, the author reflects on her professional experience working with dying patients. The essay focuses on the importance of the analyst witnessing a dying patient’s journey by fostering presence, encouraging memories, dreams, and legacies, while helping these patients create “narratives” (Broyard, 1992) of their lives. Together, the dying patient and the analyst navigate uncharted waters as the patient faces unfinished business and tries to maintain close bonds with others, striving to be fully alive as the catastrophe of illness swirls around them.
