Although widely considered one of America's most prominent psychoanalysts and psychiatrists in his time—serving twice as president of the American Psychoanalytic Association (1915–6, 1927–8)—William Alanson White's revolutionary contributions to socio-cultural theory and his legacy of advancing broad societal and mental health reforms have largely been forgotten. Though he was the leading proponent of Freud in the United States, White rejected the evolving orthodoxy of newly formed American training institutes, advocating instead for an interdisciplinary perspective attentive to societal conditions. He produced the first English-language psychoanalytic textbook and journal, championed child labor laws, and wrote seminal work on psychiatric education, community mental health, and criminal reform. White struggled to improve conditions at the segregated St. Elizabeths Hospital and attempted, unsuccessfully, to racially integrate psychiatric training—progressive stances sharply at odds with prevailing attitudes during an era of Jim Crow, violent labor strife, and mass incarceration.
