Francesca, my darling,
I have just been thinking of the house,1 having read the detailed description on the way home. I wonder if you think it will need a lot of painting or if you think that there is enough of it ‘liveable in’ to do some of the work ourselves when we are in. I have both a petrol driven pump and sprays that will do whitewashing very efficiently and fast, and an electrical paint gun. We could use these ourselves if you felt inclined to make a hobby of decorating, say one room to suit our own tastes … But I must not go on like this or I shall have
Redcourt. [Soon after marrying Francesca, Bion sold the property he had bought after the death of his first wife, Betty Jardine, and the couple moved into ‘Redcourt’, a substantial house in Croydon, Surrey. Ed.]
imagined a totally impractical dream house which will make me feel quite dissatisfied with any real house we are likely to meet.
Darling, your choice of ring1 seems to me to become more and more right; it looks lovely on your hand; you must be able to do something even to diamonds …
