To The Little Cottage, Trimingham, Norfolk
My darling,
It is very nice to have your letter and it made me feel that my hopes that you would have a refreshing and enjoyable break as well as a lot of work might be coming true. I felt as if I had had some holiday in Norfolk after I had read it …
I have fixed up with Melanie to have supper with her going on from the Gillespie's party: it will do instead of a birthday present. The idea occurred to me this evening and I think must have appealed to her as she cancelled a cinema trip to see me instead. I am of course cursing at the prospect now, but I believe it is the right thing to do and will on balance be helpful. I wish these social events did not quite so often feel like battles in which one always got the worst of it but perhaps it won't be so bad. Anyhow it may help to prevent the propagation of any idea that I am not a proper Kleinian – not a proper anything else either.
… I like to have a letter from you as well as telephone and it was very nice to hear you felt it was so lovely. I felt almost I was there when I read about the larks singing … .
