As Bion walked forward in the blazing heat, he thought he heard a voice hail him and looking round found it was Carter. The two of them walked together.
‘So, you've managed to survive this far’, said Carter. ‘I see you picked up a rifle as well.‘
‘I always do – a revolver's no damned good’, said Bion, and the two of them walked on. ‘I think I want to go further over to the right flank. I'd like to know what has happened to Asser's tank.‘
‘What has happened to your section so far?‘
‘I don't know anything at all about Hauser; he seems to have disappeared. Greene is over there on the left; I've just been talking to him. His tank got a direct hit, and they're out of it for the time being. Williams is having a look at it. Cartwright's tank got a direct hit right at the start – I was nearby at the time. The whole thing simply went up in one crash. That leaves us with Asser unaccounted for. I hope he's all right, at any rate.‘
‘We've got plenty of time’, said Carter, ‘I'm just working my way forward to the rendezvous. I haven't seen anything of the Colonel because I was separated off at the beginning to go and see whether the A Company tanks got into action all right. I'm jolly grateful to you for those compass bearings. We seem to have had the tanks pointing in the right direction, as far as I can make out.‘
