The pullover which is beautifully knitted by his wife but not suited for the baby's cold. Trains that did not behave as they should (not as frustration-evading dreams). “Had a dream; remembered it as I got off the couch last time. I had painted a picture; stuck on to one corner of it was the payment for it. I don't know how it got there.” (Frustration evasion.) He had been talking of his wish to earn a living by painting.
How much should I interpret on classical lines? He showed he did not think it a dream by the way he said, “I don't know how it (the payment) got there”. It was therefore quite likely to be more of a hallucination than a dream. And I had been able to show him, with the dream and the two trains, how he expected the trains to act as frustration-evasion items, and not as frustration-modifying ‘facts’ – real trains which took you somewhere at the cost of tolerating frustration.
This session seems to me so exciting in bearing out, together with previous sessions, the theory of α and the theories about frustration evasion and frustration modification that I can hardly trust myself to bring any kind of reasoned criticism to bear on the matter. Further, there is no doubt of the very great improvement that is taking place.
