It is curious how much anxiety I feel about following up my views. Today's session with X made me feel more than ever that not only my theories but my practice also are on the right track.
Why cannot X wake up if he cannot ‘dream’? It must be for the same reason that you cannot let something become unconscious if α is not done to that something. The inability to have visual images of what is taking place means that the emotional experience cannot be preserved either in the conscious or the unconscious. (In this I have equated α with having visual images – this is not so, I think.)
How important is attention? And is it the same, as I think it is, as ‘dreaming’ what is going on?
Paying attention to what is happening here and now involves:
respect for the truth,
respect for myself,
respect for my objects.
But
I have just displaced this by thinking I was giving a paper to the Society.
I have emotionalized it by making it an occasion where I am loved and admired.
