A. Introduction.
How the gap between theory and interpretation is to be bridged.

point of view: for the present I use it as a breakdown in K to illustrate normal K.
4 First I need to describe a number of mental activities such as attention, symbol formation and so on – I do not know what. They have already been copiously described, notably in 1. ‘Two Principles of Mental Functioning’ [1911b]. 2. Freud's view of consciousness as a sense organ for the perception of psychic qualities. 3. Klein on splitting and Projective Identification, and Paranoid Schizoid and Depressive Positions. 4. Symbol Formation by Segal and Rycroft and Klein. As I wish to investigate the function of the various mechanisms operating in consort, and as I do not know what other mechanisms may be involved, I propose, rather than allow myself to be held up, to make use of my theory of functions and call them all, known and unknown, factors in α-F.
