In this paper we explore the interface between psychoanalysis, sociology, and the human imagination. Using Zygmunt Bauman's concept of the stranger as a conceptual tool, we analyse the position of Australian indigenous peoples as uncanny strangers in their own homeland. Drawing on the work of Freud and Melanie Klein in particular, we argue that there is a strong link between phantasy, uncanniness, the concept of the stranger, and the human imagination. The uncanny stranger, we believe, has quite literally haunted the Australian settler's imagination.
