Welcome to the latest number of Free Associations journal. With no thematic hobgoblin to ride this time around we present a lively miscellany of articles and reviews we reckon merit the interest of our diverse audience.
Ryan LaMothe, who will soon bring out a volume of essays (including several published here), addresses the contribution that psychoanalytic interpretive lenses can make to a soundly reasoned, if deplorably belated, response to the follies of the Anthropocene age. Chris Joannidis follows with another remarkable intellectual expedition, on this occasion into the Hegelian problem of recognition and its accompanying psychoanalytic dynamics. As the glowering figure of Donald Trump slouches once again toward the Oval Office, Judith M. Hughes revisits the January 6th riot - or insurrection (depending on your view of intent and what was at stake) - and explores its psychoanalytic meaning for all aghast beholders. Cajsa Lindholm adds a meditative piece relating her experience of working with traumatized patients to the fortifying of the better angels of our ethical nature. Finally, Nancy Gerber draws a bead on incestuous longings in Albert Camus’ classic The Stranger. All that plus book reviews.
