I was asked to be short and sweet, but I am afraid I can't quite do either. So here is my attempt:
Last year we introduced an Intensive Study Group on Kleinian Development taught by Gail Bates, Ph.D., Angela Sowa, MA; Charles Spezzano, Ph.D.; and Dana Wideman, Ph.D.; with guest lectures by Jed Sekoff, Ph.D., and Peter Goldberg, Ph.D. It turned out to be very successful, and nearly all participants will continue to study Kleinian technique in the same format this coming year. We launched a three-year advanced training program on psychoanalytic couples psychotherapy with the Tavistock Marital Studies Institute in London, which filled to capacity. In January we met for two days with Christopher Clulow, Ph.D., in Marconi Center in Marshal. He conducted a workshop, “Basic Concepts in Couples Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.” He was followed in April by Mary Morgan, M.A., who taught a two-day workshop, “Assessment in Couples Therapy” at Mount Madonna in Watsonville. Most participants are very excited about this learning opportunity.
Our annual symposium — which focused on dreams seen from different theoretical perspectives — was a big hit. The speakers, Thomas Kirsch, M.D.; Alan Siegel, Ph.D.; Jerome Oremland, M.D.; and Gail Bates, Ph.D.; presented very interesting material, but the symposium was also a huge social gathering of South Bay psychoanalytic community. Much to our disappontment, another planned big event, “Interpretation of Dreams: One Hundred Years Later,” as well as three days of seminars and supervision with Hanna Segal, had to be cancelled at the last moment due to Dr. Segal's illness.
We continued with our classes on “Basic Psychoanalytic Concepts and Technique” taught by Joyce Zarubin, RN, MFT, and Miriam Bar, Ph.D. The classes were well liked by those who attended them, but the number of students was too low to justify continuing these classes next year. We shall focus our efforts on outreach to different graduate schools and nonanalytic professional communiti
