The Program Committee sponsored a number of well-attended and stimulating events last fall and earlier this year. Last November, Sam Gerson, Ph.D., presented a thought-provoking paper on the role of shame and humiliation in hysteria; Elizabeth Lloyd Mayer, Ph.D., was the discussant. In February, Elizabeth de Bianchedi, an Argentinian analyst, read a paper on “The Passionate Analyst,” and Charles Dithrich, Ph.D., provided an enlivening discussion. Then, in March, Peter Carnochan, Ph.D., read a fascinating paper on “The Moral Architecture of Psychoanalysis,” an excerpt from his recently published book. Michael Guy Thompson, Ph.D., was the discussant. Finally, in May, Cori Herzig, Psy.D., presented her award-winning paper on the various meanings of aggression. Annie Sweetnam, Ph.D., was the discussant.
On Saturday, April 21, Joyce McDougall delivered the Annual Lecture of 2001, “The Imprisoned Analyst: Reflections on the Therapist's Body.” A large audience was captivated by Dr. McDougall's charm, clinical sophistication, and originality. Jane Burka, Ph.D., and Peter Goldberg, Ph.D., provided exhilarating discussions, and Elizabeth Weisz, Ph.D., presented a clinical case.
We are pleased to announce that we will present a talk in November on recent developments in attachment theory by Mary Main, Ph.D., and Erik Hesse, Ph.D. From U.C. Berkeley, Main and Hesse are internationally renowned attachment researchers and theoreticians.
These events would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the committee members: Cary Dakin, MFT; Teresa Daniels, M.A.; Miquela Diaz Hope, Ph.D.; Sunny Kuegle, M.A.; Bronwen Lemmon, M.S.; Ken Meyer, Psy.D.; and Marjorie Schlenoff, MSW, CSW. I wish to thank them all for their generosity, hard work, and esprit de corps.
Finally, I would like to announce that I will be stepping down from my position as Chair of the Program Committee at the end of this year. Marjorie Schlenoff will take over as the new Chair; I have the fullest confidence
