This year the South Bay Education Committee continued to reach out to clinicians, offering high-quality programs that introduced psychoanalytic ideas and also elaborated upon them for more experienced therapists.
We are very proud of the newly developed Intensive Study Group offered in 2002-2003, “Revolutions and Evolutions: The Nature of the Object in the Legacy of Freud.” The class studied some of Freud's major papers in five content areas—Transference, Mourning, the Oedipus Complex, Two Principles of Mental Functioning, and Narcissism—connecting them to other theorists and the uses they made, or did not make, of his ideas. The papers were read slowly and in depth to increase understanding of the evolution of psychoanalytic theory. We are grateful to those who taught last year: Gail Bates, Ph.D., Vivian Dent, Ph.D., Mardy Ireland, Ph.D., Maureen Murphy, Ph.D., and Michael Guy Thompson, Ph.D. I want to especially acknowledge Angela Sowa, MFT, for her role in coming up with the concept for this course and helping to develop it.
The Eighth Annual South Bay Symposium, “The Man Who Mistook His Life for a Microwave: A Discussion on Psyche-Soma Dissociation,” was a huge success, drawing a record number of people and offering a fascinating and insightful discussion on dissociation in our culture. Annie Sweetnam, Ph.D., presented a brief paper, Peter Goldberg, Ph.D., responded to it, and Peter Klein, Ph.D., moderated a lively discussion with the audience.
This year's South Bay ISG, “On the Body: Forms and Expressions of Being,” will focus on the mind/body conundrum, with special emphasis on the expression of the self on multiple surfaces. Starting with Freud's seminal writings, the class will move on to second and third generation psychoanalytic thinking. We are very pleased to welcome our excellent faculty, Victor Bonfilio, Ph.D., Maureen Murphy, Ph.D., Beatrice Patsalides, Ph.D., Angela Sowa, MFT, Michael Guy Thompson, Ph.D., and Dana Wideman, Ph.D.
