The second year for the Sacramento Valley Education Committee has continued to be a period of tremendous growth and development. We are happy to report that our Fall Event, “Projective Identification: Contemporary Perspectives in Theory and Practice,” featuring James Grotstein, M.D., was a tremendous success with over 100 in attendance. Dr. Grotstein also conducted a small group case seminar the day before and was warmly received.
We repeated this format for our annual Spring Event, featuring Dr. Neal Skolnick, with beautifully presented case material from three of our members. An informed and exuberant audience gave the conference high marks.
As a result of our membership drive in the last year, we now have over sixty members. Our committee members—Thomas Arizmendi, Ph.D., Eric Buck, MFT, and Nancy Kernick, Psy.D.—have worked very hard to get the word out to our colleagues that we're forming a local community where psychoanalytic approaches to the therapeutic process can flourish. We have also added a new member to the committee—Katherine Fraser, DMH—who has enthusiastically joined in our efforts to expand our continuing education programs in the Sacramento Valley.
We are very excited about our Fall Event featuring Jessica Benjamin, Ph.D., who will be giving a presentation entitled, “Beyond Doer and Done To: Resolving Impasses and Working with the Intersubjective Third” on Saturday, November 15th, 2003, in Davis, California.
We are also very pleased to announce a new lecture series entitled, “Contemporary Issues in Psychoanalysis,” which will cover a variety of topics of interest to the practicing clinician. The series of lectures will be offered on Saturday mornings on January 10, February 7, and March 13, 2004. The first lecture will be “How to Find the Sex in Psychosexuality: Erotic Transference and the Sexual Body,” presented by Dianne Elise, Ph.D. The second in the series is entitled “The Subjugation of the Body in Eating Disorders: A Particularly Female Solution,
