The Associate Member Committee focuses on helping make the study and practice of psychoanalytic psychology accessible to Bay Area students. As part of the Speakers Bureau program, we bring NCSPP-affiliated psychotherapists and psychoanalysts to local graduate schools, where they share their thoughts with students on the experience of working psychoanalytically in a variety of settings and modes. All presentations are free of charge.
In the 2002-2003 academic year, we brought the following speakers to area schools: Barbara Blasdel, Ph.D.; Joe Bobrow, Ph.D.; Peter Carnochan, Ph.D.; Peter Goldberg, Ph.D.; Toni Heineman, D.M.H.; Crystal Johnson, Ph.D.; Ralph Kaywin, D.M.H.; Beatrice Patsalides, Ph.D.; and Justin Simon, M.D. Speakers covered topics ranging from working psychoanalytically in general, to psychoanalysis and spirituality, to working psychoanalytically with children and severely disturbed patients. Our thanks to these presenters for their participation and their generosity.
Along with the Program Committee, the Associate Member Committee organizes NCSPP's annual Student Paper Award contest and presentation. The recipient of the 2003 award was Erika Clowes, whose excellent paper, “Regressive Nostalgia in Teshigahara's Woman in the Dunes,” is published in this issue. Erika presented her paper this past April, with a discussion by Teresa Doyle, Ph.D. The deadline for submissions for next year's Student Paper Award is November 14, 2003.
This year's newly constituted committee plans to present a full slate of speakers at the Wright Institute and the California Institute of Integral Studies. We also would like to present at other schools as well; any students interested in helping bring speakers to their school should please contact me at (510) 273-9587.
Also in the works for Spring 2004 is a special colloquium and reception for Associate Members and students—details forthcoming.
Most importantly, great thanks for their time and effort go out to our committee members, w
