In January 2006, I stepped up to relieve Kali Hess as Chairperson for the Peninsula/South Bay Education Committee. I was quick to recognize the incredible work that she and her committee had accomplished over the five years of her chairmanship. They established high clinical standards for programs, showed creativity in educational offerings, and provided endless devotion to detail. The culture of the committee was professional, hardworking, and welcoming. Kali deserves a great tribute for her contribution to the work and mission of NCSPP.
The Peninsula/South Bay Year-long Intensive Study Group for 2005-2006 was “At Play with Winnicott: Dialogues in Transitional Space.” The group studied Winnicott's influence on Ogden, Green, Phillips, Bollas, and Lacan. Faculty included Maureen Murphy, Annie Sweetnam, Angela Sowa, Hugh Grubb, Martine Aniel, and guest speaker, Mardy Ireland. Each faculty member did a superb job in reviewing the various theorists and involving the class in analytic thinking and discussion of case material.
We held our Eleventh P/SB Annual Symposium entitled, “Generations of Meaning.” Angela Sowa presented infant observation material, which was discussed by Mardy Ireland and Jan Baeuerlen. Dennis Faccino facilitated the presentation. The audience participated in a case study, which helped integrate the relevance and meaning of early attunement. A lovely lunch and get-together rounded out the day.
Terrance McLarnan hosted three child training programs at the Center for Healthy Development in San Jose. Nancy Peters presented “Aggression in Children, Is It All Bad?” Cheryl Goodrich presented “Trauma of the Oedipal Victor: The Treatment of a Five-Year-Old Boy.” And Ann Martini presented “Interventions for Change in Child Therapy.”
In July, our committee met at Alison Cabell's for our first annual retreat. We reviewed plans for 2006-2007 educational offerings, looked at personal/professional areas of interest that could be realized through this NCSPP committee,
