The Peninsula/South Bay Education Committee once again stepped up to advance analytic thinking and create a more cohesive and solid analytic community. Over the past three years, the P/SB Committee has focused on new ideas to welcome clinicians into a community rich in analytic dialogue, giving everyone a place to grow professionally, develop skills, and enhance their practices.
The year began with a packed house in the 2007-2008 ISG. We presented “From Inspiration to Interpretation: Analysts Translate Influential Ideas Into Meaningful Work.” We invited faculty to choose seminal papers that were formative in their analytic development. Included in the faculty were Lee Rather, Ph.D., Peter Carnochan, Ph.D., Martine Aniel, Ph.D., Michael Guy Thompson, Ph.D., and Hugh Grubb, Psy.D, with Dennis Facchino, Ph.D., discussant. Participants found themselves more fully alive with both the analysts and their writings, which fostered a new depth to their clinical work.
We also hosted a new series of Salons that met the mark of expanding our P/SB community. We saw many faces from the year before and added new colleagues. One of our aims is to expand programs south, so we hosted the events in the private homes of MJ Myatt in Redwood City, Alison Cabell in Los Altos, and Alan Javurick and Diane Strongwater in San Jose. Our presenters included Peter Carnochan, “Psychoanalytic Valentines: the Possibility of Love”; Diane Strongwater, MFT, and Hugh Grubb, Ph.D., “Journeys Through the Transference — Two Analysts’ Personal Reflections”; and Shelley Nathans, Ph.D., “Creative Couples.” Along with wonderful presentations and great discussions, we indulged in lovely food and wine. Our Friday-night Salons have become an integral way to reach a range of clinicians at all levels of their professional careers, from those folks just starting in the field to seasoned analysts, to simply friends of the analytic community.
We have established an annual series of South Bay Seminars in Child and Adolesc
