The Community Mental Health Committee was formed in 2011 as a collaboration among three psychoanalytic organizations — NCSPP, PINC, and Access Institute — and the clinicians involved with those entities. As the committee met and discussed our purpose, a collective goal emerged: to address the historically held and currently perceived gap between psychoanalytic institutions and community mental health.
The starting point for our committee, and the community we hoped to engage, became a daylong conference where participants could pursue the intersection of psychoanalytic thought and working in Community Mental Health settings. This innovative conference brought together a range of service providers, therapists, and psychoanalysts to explore how to build capacity and think deeply in our various settings. The event included community mental health providers, licensed mental health professionals, graduate students in training, as well as members of the lay public who have an interest in psychoanalytic psychology.
As a follow-up to this conference, the CMH committee held a gathering of all those interested in “moving forward” the goal of holding space for and reflecting on psychoanalytic thought and work in community settings. From this gathering a community formed, connected via Google Group, to hold regular meetings addressing the psychoanalytically oriented work currently being done. All those interested in participating in this vibrant discussion are encouraged to contact NCSPP. Upcoming events will be announced through the Google Group and NCSPP.
