As of the time of this writing, we (Caroline Mok, Gregory Desierto, Grace Gethers, Ken Gladstone, Joe Zamaria, David Brown, and I) continue to meet monthly to reflect on what it means to develop community with NCSPP. We've been experimenting. In the past six months, we have launched our bi-monthly social events. For our first two events, we held a Tea & Social at Samovar / Yerba Buena in San Francisco. Both events were a success, each bringing in between 15 and 20 people, many who had never attended a NCSPP event before. For our next event, we met at the Exploratorium's special exhibit, “The Changing Face of What is Normal: Mental Health,” followed by food and discussion.
We are also working on developing an event to express appreciation to all those who work tirelessly on behalf of NCSPP: our board and committee members. And finally, we are planning the holiday party for all NCSPP members. More information on both of these events is coming soon. Finally, we're thinking about other ways to develop community within NCSPP, including collaborating with other committees to develop communities focused on special interests.
Building community among psychotherapists is a daunting task. We hope to create events that are as welcoming and easygoing as possible. The relationships we develop with colleagues are invaluable; not only do they facilitate collaboration, consultation, and referrals, but they are also avenues toward genuine friendship. We hope that our efforts are fruitful in the coming year.
I want to thank my fellow committee members for all their efforts this year. Without them, none of what we have accomplished would have been possible, and it has been absolutely delightful to work with each and every one of them during my time as committee chair.
