Reflective Spaces/Material Places is a collaborative effort among three organizing bodies (NCSPP, PINC, and the ACCESS Institute) with active input from participants representing multiple Community Mental Health Agencies. Our kick-off event was a day-long conference at which Neil Altman acted as respondent to two case presentations representing psychoanalytically framed interventions within the context of community mental health services. From that point forward interested providers gathered bimonthly to create a community space for continued case presentations, consultation, discussion of “space” within CMH settings, and countertransference in the CMH service provider, among other topics.
The coming year will include the creation of a writing group to begin documenting the themes that are emerging from our meetings, and a second day-long conference, which is in the planning stages. Former presenters will use a fishbowl format to discuss the impact of presenting on their work.
This first year has been generative and exciting, with enthusiastic participation averaging 40 providers per meeting. The organizers hope to increase exposure by reaching out to providers working and thinking at the intersection between psychoanalytic foundations and community mental health.
