The Program Committee had a spectacular year, thanks to our dedicated committee members. I wish to thank our outgoing Acting Chair Melissa Kohner for her grit and professionalism. Annice Ormiston, committee member and liaison for the Annual Couple Therapy Event, has gone above and beyond her duties. I also want to thank our newest members to the committee, David Gatta and Rebecca Spengler, as well as the NCSPP Board. We received excellent feedback from the community on our programming this year, and I promise we have more great things in store.
I want to start with congratulating Ms. Kristin Fiorella, winner of the student paper award for “Gaps in our Stories: Form and Emptiness in Case Formulation.” We are grateful to The Psychotherapy Institute in Berkeley for graciously co-sponsoring the reading and reception. We would also like to thank Dr. Dianne Elise for her contributions as discussant.
Those who attended our Spring Scientific Meeting, “The Enigma of Ana,” offered overwhelmingly positive feedback for Dr. Tom Woolridge and Dr. Mary Brady. Their presentation provided a nuanced understanding of the complicated role of Pro-Ana websites in the lives of our patients with eating disorders. Many attendees requested more from these presenters on this topic — we are listening.
Our Annual Event, “A Day with Anne Alvarez,” was a delightful opportunity to hear from the influential analyst in person. Dr. Alvarez presented on tailoring interventions to connect with difficult-to-reach patients. Her theoretical ideas were further developed in discussion with Dr. Mary Margaret McClure and Dr. Paula Mandel.
We have great things planned for the year ahead. In the spring, renowned analyst Dr. Salman Akhtar will speak on mental pain and the minority experience. Those who are interested should get tickets early; our Annual Event for 2014 sold out!
