The Community Mental Health Committee was developed to provide support to clinicians working in community-based organizations. With the demands of documentation and limited resources, the space to think clinically in working with historically marginalized populations can be restricted. By offering events, the CMH Committee aims to create room for psychoanalytically informed thinking, networking with like-minded individuals, and fun to maintain energy for this challenging yet important work.
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, of political movements, and of disparities has continued to affect the lives of those we serve as well as our own. While NCSPP paused programming this past year, the boards and committees continued to meet to discuss how racism and other -isms (sexism, heterosexism, etc.) are embedded in our practices and infrastructure. This has allowed room for us to think about the types of events that the CMH committee might create for the future. We are considering integrating fields outside of psychology into our clinical thinking space while continuing to hold an analytic frame. Meanwhile, the popular hiking outings and reading groups will continue.
Many thanks go to committee members Geetali Chitre, and Hoa My Nguyen, for their dedication, ideas, and collaborative spirit. We heartily welcome Halleli Toder, and look forward to her energy and ideas.
The Education Committee strives to develop courses that teach psychoanalytic theory and practice in a way that is relevant and meaningful to a diverse community of clinicians. This has been a transitional time for our committee. In line with NCSPP's decision to step away from programming, we did not hold any courses during the 2021-2022 academic year, but instead continued sifting through the institutional practices and processes that interfere with our goals.
