This paper explores the encounter between the male analyst and his patients when they find themselves on the maternal erotic playground. When the male analyst becomes the recipient of his patient's earliest maternal erotic transferences, diffuse questions of gender, bodies, and sexualities abound. While this work is challenging for both male and female analysts, the author proposes that there are internal obstacles unique in kind or intensity to the male analyst when he comes face to face with the earliest somatic–affective states of his patients. Clinical examples highlight the intense somatic–erotic embranglements which are typically encountered when working with these earliest transferences.
