In moving away from Freudian drive theory, relational psychoanalytic paradigms are often accused of downplaying or even ignoring the body. Through an examination of Winnicott's and Fairbairn's writing, this paper will argue that this impression is mistaken. The categories through which we experience embodiment and by which we describe that experience are inevitably relational categories. This leads to a psychoanalytic approach to traditional mind-body dualism. A case illustrating embodiment issues from a relational perspective is presented at the conclusion.
