No doubt: this is what Freud scholars have sorely missed and have been looking for for decades, a concordance to Freud's Gesammelte Werke in the original German, fortunately including the Nachtragsband of 1987. Up to the appearance of this monumental work, scholars had to make do with the concordance to Strachey's English translation of Freud (Guttman et al., 1984), which of course is rather a Strachey concordance than a Freud concordance. We are deeply indebted to an enterprising Canadian publisher, generous donors, and the enormous work by the indefatigable Samuel Guttman and his collaborators, to achieve for Freud what has long been a matter of course for researchers on Shakespeare, Goethe, the Bible, etc.
Following the design of the English concordance, its German counterpart uses a “Key-Word-In-Context … format [which] arrays the index words, each followed by its frequency, in columns with as much context before and after the word as space allows … The contexts that follow each index word are alphabetized all the way to the end so as to produce an index of phrases, as well as an index of words” (p. xvi). Every quoted line of context includes the corresponding volume and page number in the Gesammelte Werke, along with the abbreviated title of the work and its date of publication. The page number is followed by a, b, or f, meaning that the quote in question is to be found in the upper or lower half of a page, or in a footnote (the English concordance divides each page into four parts: a, b, c, d). With the exception of some 197 omitted common words, such as und, in, zu, etc., every single word in Freud
