The OPIFER (Organizzazione di Psicoanalisti Italiani—Federazione e Registro) was founded in Italy on November 4, 1996. This is an association of psychoanalysts who follow various orientations and share scientific and cultural interests. They aim to encourage a pluralistic approach, which welcomes the confrontation among different psychoanalytic positions and rejects any dogmatic approach. The model of this undertaking is the American Academy of Psychoanalysis, which was founded on the same principles forty years ago, in 1956. Unlike the Academy, the OPIFER will also be open to non-medical members.
The initiative of founding the OPIFER was taken by three Italian groups belonging to the IFPS (International Federation of Psychoanalytic Societies)—namely the “Associazione Fiorentina di Psicoanalisti Neofreudiani”, connected with the “Istituto di Psicoterapia Analitica” (Florence), the SIPRe (Società Italiana di Psicoanalisi della Relazione) (Rome/Genoa/Milan) and the “Istituto Erich Fromm di Psicoanalisi Neofreudiana” (Bologna)—and by CIFRA (Circolo Fiorentino Ricerca e Aggiornamento), a psychoanalytic group based in Florence. These groups include three training institutes and 98 analysts and publish two biannual journals: “Psicoanalisi Neofreudiana” (Associazione Fiorentina di Psicoanalisti Neofreudiani) and “Ricerca Psicoanalitica” (SIPRe).
Other groups will be invited to join the OPIFER. These groups will form a federation to guarantee the characteristics of the association. Applications for membership—following the principle of the American Academy—will be accepted on an individual basis and will be included in a roster.
