Thanks to the initiative of his “Italian ambassador” , past President of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society (SPI), and of Bion's daughter Parthenope , held nine seminars in Rome between July 8 and July 17, 1977. Published in Italian in 1985, these came out in English, as The Italian seminars, in 2005 (Bion, 2005). Not only had most of his books been translated into Italian before his visit, but he and his work had also gradually become one of the most important sources of inspiration for a whole group of Italian psychoanalysts. This is the background, the tradition out of which the work of Antonino Ferro developed. Among the many works dedicated to Bion, let me recall, for example, the monographic issue of the Rivista di Psicoanalisi edited in 1981 by Parthenope Bion Talamo and Claudio Neri; the anthology Letture bioniane [Bionian readings] edited in 1987 by Claudio Neri, Antonello Correale, and Paola Fadda; the introduction to his work written by Eugenio Gaburri and Ferro in 1988; and the book published in 1999 by Giovanni Hautmann (president of the SPI ) under the title Il mio debito con Bion [My debt to Bion].
The year before she died, Bion's daughter Parthenope had been able to organise in Turin, together with Franco Borgogno and Silvio Merciai, a very well attended (more than 700 participants) Bion Centennial Conference, whose proceedings came out in three books: one in Italian, Lavorare con Bion , in 1998; and two in English, the first one in 1998, Bion's legacy to groups and institutions (1998b), and the second one in 2002, W.R. Bion. Between past and future. The very lively interest in Bion produced by this conference (which had actually started at the IPA Amsterdam Congress of ) continued through the conferences held in the following years in , , , and Rome (January ). The next one, co-organised by Howard Levine and Lawrence Brown, will take place in Boston on July 23-26, 2009. Very well organised by a committee coordinated by Giorgio Corrente, the Bion 20
