The first thing that comes to my mind thinking back on the last Forum of the International Federation of Psychoanalytic Societies (IFPS) held in Bergamo six months ago is a sense of thankfulness for the work done by the scientific and organizing committee chaired by Mattia Maggioni, for having been able to organize a good Forum with over 350 participants in less than a year and a half’s time – volunteering to do it at a time in which no other IFPS society was ready to do so. This is why I feel the need to mention here by name all the colleagues who helped him to take and successfully carry out such an initiative: Marco Aldegheri, Mauro Ambrosini, Rosella Bo, Daniela Maggioni, Giuliana Mioli, Vittoria Russo, Anna Sironi, Giovanna Tatti and Carla Weber. They all belong to the Milan Associazione di Studi Psicoanalitici (ASP), which became a member society of IFPS at the VIth IFPS Forum held in Rio de Janeiro in October 1989 – the first Forum in which I participated, while being a candidate of the training institute of the ASP, the Scuola di Psicoterapia Psicoanalitica (SPP). Because of the different missions of a training institute such as the SPP and a post-graduate society such as the ASP, and because of the personal conflicts connected to them, the two bodies separated from each other in the spring of 2023 – the SPP in the meantime having developed its own post-graduate society, and having applied for separate membership in the IFPS. Such an event, together with the fact that the Milan group had never before organized an IFPS event, must also have stimulated the pride and the sense of initiative of the ASP, inspiring it to volunteer to organize the 2024 Forum.
The second thought which comes to my mind in connection with the preparation of this report is the fact that starting with the IFPS Forum held in Florence in May 1994, I have not only participated in it and in all the subsequent Fora, but also written all the reports about them – which regularly came out in the
