From its beginning, psychoanalysis dealt with questions of politics and addiction, although, on the other hand, they were never at the center of the psychoanalytical discourse. This might be due to the fact that severely ill addicted persons are only very rarely treated in outpatient settings. Addiction is also a highly relevant topic in society and for political decisions, which psychoanalysts are often reluctant to deal with. The paper shows historical and contemporary links concerning these issues.
