The 2017 film Get Out by the African American director Jordan Peele has been widely reviewed by journalists, activists, and sociologists. To our knowledge, it has not yet been reviewed or commented on by psychoanalysts. We will discuss the film from the perspective of a White psychoanalyst and a Black psychoanalytically oriented psychologist. The White author will discuss her experience of the film as a daydream reaching deeply into the screenwriter/director's unconscious beliefs. The Black author will discuss her experience of it as a reminder of the threat to Black and Brown bodies when individuals are not “woke” and will explore the collective intergenerational trauma forcing Black and Brown people into the state of being “woke.” Finally, she will discuss how, even in the collaborative process of creating this paper, she experienced her Blackness as exploited to legitimize and validate the White author's experience.
