This special issue on School Safety and Violence: Interdisciplinary Understandings, Goals and Prevention/intervention Strategies is dedicated to Stuart W. Twemlow, MD.
Stuart has been a pioneer in applied psychoanalysis in a wide range of ways including being the co-founder of this Journal, the co-chair of the COPE group (Committee on Psychoanalytic Education) that focused the development of a curriculum on psychoanalytic thinking applied to community and social problems and co-editor of the 2018 Textbook of Applied Psychoanalysis. He was appointed by President Bill Clinton to serve on the Academic Advisory Council of the United States Presidential Campaign Against Youth Violence. In addition, Stuart has been a research and practice leader in a variety of school violence and safety informed efforts. Stuart was one of the first to understand and write about the social nature of mean, cruel and/or bullying behaviors: There is virtually always a witness or bystander who supports or challenges bullying behavior. Finally, Stuart was the 2012 recipient of the Sigourney Awards. The Sigourney Awards recognizes groundbreaking applications of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic thought across academic, humanitarian, and arts-focused fields.
