The child has a greater ability for observation than has hitherto been believed. The pressure of the environment causes it to lose a certain amount of this capacity, but even so it is able to perceive and to react to many of its mother's repressed wishes. This assumption with regard to character formation dispenses, in part, with the generally received explanations of heredity and telepathy. (Gedankenubertragung?)
