Over 13 million selective service registrants were examined. Whites showed a high rejection rate for psychoneuroses and psychoses: negroes showed a high illiteracy rate. The hypertensive rate was lower for negroes than whites. Neuro-circulatory asthenia and tachycardia were six times as frequent in whites and peptic ulcer ten times. The war-time incidence of psychosomatic disease, including all races, is as follows, per 1, 000 registrants, asthma 8.4, peptic ulcer 4.3, history of peptic ulcer 3.4, gastro-intestinal syndrome 1.7, neuro-circulatory asthenia 8.6, functional disease of expressive movements 1.3. All these rates are two to three times the peace-time rate.
