After an introduction to Psychiatry via Child Guidance, the author became Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Buffalo. Since 1945 he has been Supervisor of the Department of Mental Hygiene of the State of Michigan. This text-book is both for general and psychiatric nurses and is one of, if not indeed, the best text-book in the field. The first quarter of the book introduces Psychology as it is related to Psychiatry. Freudian Metapsychology and Meyerian Psychobiology are discussed most extensively. The middle half of the book covers most of the whole range of psychiatric problems, and many excellently summarized case histories are included. The last and perhaps the best quarter deals with Mental Hygiene throughout childhood and adulthood.
The author has deliberately attempted to write simply. This he has done. In contrast to the simplicity of the text one is perhaps surprised with the technical nature of the references given at the end of each chapter and also at the end of the book. Many of the most useful, special but elementary texts are not mentioned.
A useful Glossary is appended.
