Psychoanalytic Review, 1948, Vol. XXXV, No. 3, pp. 273–284.
In every analysis three battles are being fought unconsciously by the patient: 1. The unconscious Ego's fight with and against the torturing inner conscience, i.e. a battle with Super-Ego. 2. The unconscious Ego's fight against the progress of the neurosis per se. 3. Intensification of the battle against the neurosis through 'mobilization of unconscious guilt'. This intensification is artificially induced through the analysis. The patient relives, in projection upon the harmless and innocent analyst, his by-gone conflicts. By putting the displaced inner guilt at the place where it belongs genetically, the 'unproductively misused' guilt is mobilized in a 'productive' way—thus destroying in favourable cases the patient's neurosis.
