Sterba examines a legend which appeared among the American G.I.'s during the last World War. The words 'Kilroy was here' would be found in all sorts of public places, but also in the most inaccessible and dangerous places, and especially in latrines. It would be found under scrawled cartoons of a pregnant woman. The author notes that cutting the name in two gives kill-roi, the one who kills the king. Thus the legend is a revival of one of the most ancient legends. The emotions are so powerful this legend swept over the entire world. The enemy country is the mother. The Kilroy inscription has been found in the most inaccessible places. This inaccessibility gives it mother significance. It is a grandiose fulfilment of Oedipal wishes. Kilroy is the hero of all legends, the father murderer.
