This volume contains papers by Sigmund Freud, Karl Abraham, Richard Sterba, Sandor Rado, Helene Deutsch, Georg Gero, E. Pichon-Rivière, Ángel Garma, Edith Jacobson, Sandor Lorand, Betram D. Lewin, Melanie Klein, and has been compiled and introduced by Ángel Garma and Luis Rascovsky. The editors have set themselves the ambitious task to inform and to interest the medical reader and the psychologist about the psycho-analytic theory and practice of the manicdepressive states. E. Pichon-Rivière's History of manic-depressive States forms the first part of the book and introduces its reader to the findings of the non-analytical schools. The main part deals with the psycho-analytic investigations of melancholia. The development of thought on this subject is thrown into relief by extensive quotations from Freud's Obras Completas which also form the frame. The contributions of the other before-mentioned authors follow in chronological order. A summary by Ángel Garma concludes part 2. The third part is devoted to mania. A quotation from Freud's Wit and its relation to the Unconscious is followed by B. D. Lewin's 'Analysis and Structure of a transient hypomania' and Helene Deutsch's 'Chronische Hypomanie', all these serve as illustrations for the third part. Melanie Klein's contribution to the psychogenesis of manic depressive States forms the fourth and last part of the volume.
