Twelve analysts have collaborated with Arnoldo Rascovsky to write this comprehensive text-book on Psychosomatic Pathology. The authors aim at a close collaboration between psycho-analysts and general physicians in order to reach a new understanding of pathological processes. They stress the importance of the psychological aspect in somatic illness and reaffirm their points by their own investigations. Their deliberations are based partially on the findings made in the course of analytic treatment and partially on psycho-analytically directed investigations of cases with similar symptoms and similar mechanisms.
Didactical considerations shape the layout of the material. Therefore an introductory chapter on the sexual development of the child in relation to psychosomatic problems precedes the clinical papers. Investigations into single organs or organ systems follow. The digestive tract, the respiratory system, blood circulation, neuro-psychiatry, gynæcology, endocrinology, obstetrics and traumatology are the topics under review. Throughout the authors make full use of the literature on psychosomatics and in a last chapter they give a summary of the more recent literature.
An extensive investigation into bronchial asthma and arterial hypertension are planned for the future.
