The Erlebnis or inner experience which the author regards as a primal phenomenon is grossly neglected by analysts. He presents work from Freud to show that Freud considered anxiety and the ego to reside ultimately in the human being as an Erlebnis. To these two is added the Erlebnis of masculinity and femininity. He believes that the end result of one's own Erlebnis of being feminine need not contain castration as the axis of the inner responsive experience. A woman can be satisfied with herself, knowing she is complete, having entirely overcome the phase of wishing to be a boy.
